Penetralia of Passion

The act of creation should be what brings creative minds joy. Unfortunately, the stresses of outsider eyes, deadlines, and consumer demands can induce more stress than joy. Penetralia of Passion brings to light the innermost workings of a craftsman’s raw practice. In solitude, creatives are free to practice and hone their skill at ease. There is beauty in raw practice. An audience is generally intended to view a craftsman’s work as a finished product. Penetralia of Passion’s objective is to redirect focus away from the product to its genesis, the creator.

Environmental portraiture allows my subjects to be immersed with their work in total solitude, disregarding my presence. I document the organic process of creation and observe the fervor this process induces. The location of each shoot is personal to each subject to immerse them in their own familiar creative environment. This is a crucial element to my subject’s comfortability. The complete work has been photographed as diptychs, allowing the opportunity to come closer and observe an element of the craft at hand within close proximity. The images use selective focus to guide the audience’s eye, resting only on what is important to the moment. I hope to leave viewers reflecting on how they invest their time to cultivate a creative lifestyle and urge creators to find joy in and celebrate their creative process.
